Armona Island is accessible all year round by ferry from Olhão. The crossing takes around 15 to 20 minutes and gives you your first taste of the Ria Formosa before you even reach the island. It is the most affordable option and the one most commonly used by both locals and visitors.

In July and August, Armona is particularly popular with Olhão locals and visitors. At busy times, especially towards the end of the day, ferries can fill up and you may have to wait before boarding. If you prefer more flexibility, a water taxi can be a very useful alternative.

By Water Taxi: Faster and More Flexible

Water taxis also run between Olhão and Armona. They are faster and offer more flexibility than the regular ferry, making them especially convenient if you are travelling in a group, carrying luggage, want to leave at a specific time or simply want to avoid a long wait during the busy summer season.

Drop-Off Area and Parking in Olhão

If you are arriving by car with luggage, groceries or beach equipment, there is a short-stay drop-off area at the entrance to the street directly opposite the ferry terminal. It is a convenient place to unload before the driver goes to park the car.

To really understand Armona, there is one local expression worth knowing: Passada da Armona, usually shortened simply to “the Passada”. This is the name commonly used for the main pedestrian route that runs through the village from the ferry area towards the ocean.

Armona Beaches: Two Different Sides of the Island

Ria Formosa Side: Calm Waters, Great for Families

Just a few steps from the ferry terminal, the beaches on the Ria Formosa side are especially pleasant for families and young children. To the left and right of the pier, the water is usually much calmer than on the ocean side, and access is immediate without having to cross the whole island.

It is also a great place for a relaxed swim, paddleboarding or simply enjoying the lagoon. At low tide, the landscape changes completely, revealing large sandy areas and very shallow water that children especially enjoy.

As everywhere in the Ria Formosa, it is still important to keep an eye on the tides, especially as the water starts to rise and gradually covers the sandbanks.

Atlantic Side: A Vast Wild Beach

To reach the Atlantic beach, you need to cross the village and walk around 1 kilometre from the ferry terminal. The walk is part of the experience: it follows the island’s main pedestrian route, past houses, narrow streets and small shops, before reaching the dunes and the ocean.

The Praia da Armona on the Atlantic side has a completely different feel: a huge open beach facing the ocean, perfect for long walks, swimming or simply finding a quieter spot. At low tide, large sandbanks appear and completely transform the landscape.

Swimming here requires a little more caution than on the lagoon side. The sea can be rougher and currents may be stronger. You should also watch the incoming tide, which can quickly cover some of the exposed sandbanks.

Once you reach the ocean side, you will find the Snack-Bar Camaleão and Lanacosta restaurant, both handy places to stop for a drink or a meal before or after the beach.

Walking to Praia da Fuseta

If you enjoy long beach walks, you can continue on foot towards Praia da Fuseta. Armona and Fuseta are located on the same barrier island, so the route follows the beach directly, with the Atlantic on one side and the dunes on the other.

This is not a short walk, though. The distance is considerable, so bring plenty of water, sun protection and take the heat and tides into account. It is a beautiful option for experienced walkers who want to discover a quieter side of the island away from the busier area around Armona village.

At Low Tide: Traditional Fishing and Life on the Ria

At low tide, Armona reveals another side of everyday life in the Ria Formosa. As the sandy and muddy flats emerge, you can often see traditional activities linked to fishing and shellfish gathering, practices that are deeply rooted in local culture.

Clams, cockles and other shellfish are part of this traditional way of life, but harvesting them is regulated. Licences, minimum sizes, closed seasons, authorised areas and catch limits may apply. For visitors, the best approach is simply to observe these local traditions rather than assume that shellfish can be collected freely.

Low tide is also a lovely time to walk along the lagoon, watch the birds and explore the sandbanks that completely transform the landscape around the island.

Restaurants, Bars and Small Shops

Despite its small size, Armona has several restaurants, cafés and bars spread throughout the village. Near the ferry terminal and in the first part of the island, you will find places such as A3 Wine Bar, Restaurante Carlos, Tólinhas, Paradise with its rooftop terrace, and Kallina’s.

Further into the island, Convívio is another popular stop. Once you reach the Atlantic side, Lanacosta and Snack-Bar Camaleão are handy places for lunch, a drink or a break close to the beach.

Armona also has two small local shops: one near the entrance to the island and another further into the village. They are useful for basic groceries, drinks and beach supplies. Opening days and times can vary considerably depending on the season, so outside the summer months it is a good idea to buy your main supplies in Olhão before boarding the boat.

During the summer season, the island is much livelier and terraces can fill up quickly. Outside the main season, some restaurants and cafés may have reduced opening hours or close temporarily. If you are coming especially for a particular place, it is worth checking that it is open before your visit.

Plan Your Visit

Armona is easy to explore on foot, but a little preparation will make your day much more enjoyable. In summer, bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes or sandals, especially if you plan to walk to the Atlantic side or spend a long time walking on the sand.

There are no cash machines on the island. Although many places now accept card payments, it is still a good idea to bring some cash with you before boarding in Olhão.

There are public toilets near the entrance to the island. From the ferry terminal, follow the main walkway for a short distance and you will find them on the left. Additional facilities are also available in the beach areas during the bathing season.

Although Armona has a couple of small shops as well as several cafés and restaurants, opening hours can vary a lot depending on the season. Outside the summer months, it is a good idea to buy your main supplies in Olhão, especially if you are planning to spend the whole day on the island.

Staying Overnight on Armona Island

Spending a night on Armona is a very different experience from visiting for the day. Once the last ferry leaves for Olhão and most day visitors have gone, the island becomes noticeably quieter. The narrow streets empty out, the terraces become more peaceful and you can really enjoy the calm of the Ria Formosa.

You can find holiday homes and apartments to rent through platforms such as Airbnb or local Facebook groups. During the summer season, it is best to book well in advance, as accommodation on the island is limited.

Festilha usually takes place in September, towards the end of the summer season. The dates change every year: in 2026, it was held on 19 and 20 September. It is a great opportunity to experience Armona in a completely different way from a simple beach day.
