Car rental in the Algarve from Faro Airport

Car rental in the Algarve and at Faro Airport
The complete guide

Renting a car in the Algarve gives you the freedom to explore the region at your own pace, from its beaches and coastal towns to inland villages, Monchique, Sagres and the Vicentine Coast. However, a car is not essential for every trip. Depending on where you are staying and what you plan to do, you may be able to get around using a combination of walking, trains, ferries, Uber, Bolt and private transfers.

For travellers who would like their own vehicle, Faro Airport generally offers the widest choice of cars and rental companies. Pick-up arrangements can vary, however: you may collect your car inside the terminal, at the P4 car park — also known as the RAC Car Park — or from an off-airport office reached by shuttle bus.

Choosing the right deal is about much more than the car shown in the listing. Accepted bank cards, deposits, excess amounts, insurance cover, pick-up locations and return conditions can vary considerably between companies. It is also important to check which local rental company will actually provide the vehicle and read its recent Google reviews before booking.

This guide covers everything you need to know about car rental in the Algarve and at Faro Airport, including how to choose a rental company, how DiscoverCars works, debit and credit card requirements, deposits, insurance, extra charges, toll roads, driving into Spain, collecting your vehicle and ways to explore the Algarve without a car.

Do you need to rent a car to explore the Algarve?

Renting a car in the Algarve is not essential for every traveller. The right choice mainly depends on where you are staying, how long your trip lasts and the places you would like to visit. For a holiday based in one town or city, you can often get around on foot and use trains, ferries, Uber, Bolt, taxis or private transfers for longer journeys.

A car becomes far more useful when your plans include several parts of the region, remote beaches, inland villages or day trips that are difficult to organise by public transport. The Algarve stretches for more than 150 kilometres between the Spanish border and the Vicentine Coast, and not every place is easy to reach without a vehicle.

When is a car genuinely useful?

A rental car is particularly useful for exploring inland Algarve, visiting several beaches in one day or planning your own route between the east and west of the region.

It makes trips to Monchique, Silves, Alte, Salir, Cacela Velha, Sagres and the Vicentine Coast much easier. It is also a convenient way to reach wineries, walking trails, out-of-the-way restaurants and small villages with limited public transport.

Car rental can also be a good option for families with young children, travellers carrying a lot of luggage, groups of friends, guests staying in a villa away from a town centre and business travellers with several appointments during their stay.

Can you stay in the Algarve without a car?

Yes. A car-free holiday is perfectly possible when your accommodation is in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos, close to shops, restaurants and a railway station. These towns and cities are easy to explore mainly on foot, while the train can be used for some journeys along the coast.

In Olhão, the historic centre, markets, marina, waterfront and ferry terminal are all easy to reach without a car. The islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol are reached by ferry or water taxi and are not accessible to private cars.

Uber, Bolt, taxis and private transfers can fill the gaps in the public transport network when travelling to the airport, your accommodation, a beach or a restaurant. Availability may be more limited in rural areas, late at night or during busy periods.

Renting a car for only a few days

There is no need to keep a car for your entire holiday. A sensible option is to travel from Faro Airport to your accommodation by Uber, Bolt, taxi or private transfer, then rent a vehicle only on the days when you genuinely need one.

For example, you could spend several days exploring one town and its surroundings, then rent a car to visit inland Algarve, more distant villages or the west coast. This also saves you from looking for parking on days spent entirely on foot or visiting the islands.

In some towns, a local company allows you to collect a vehicle without returning to the airport. In Olhão, Cool Wheels Olhão is the only tourist car rental company based directly in the town. This can be a useful option for travellers staying in Olhão without a car who would like to rent one for an occasional day trip.

Which option suits your trip?

To quickly work out which option is best, start with the location of your accommodation and the day trips you are planning.

  • Staying mainly in a town or city centre: you may not need a car;
  • A holiday in Olhão with several days on the islands: walking, ferries and occasional car rental are usually the best combination;
  • Remote accommodation or a countryside villa: a car is strongly recommended;
  • Visiting several towns, beaches and villages: a car gives you much more freedom;
  • Trips to Monchique, Sagres or the Vicentine Coast: a car is generally the most practical solution;
  • A short stay with no plans outside one town: Uber, Bolt, trains and transfers may be enough.

Amo-te Olhão tip: before renting a car for your whole trip, identify the days when you will actually need it. A few days of car rental may be enough when your accommodation is in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos.

Where can you rent a car in the Algarve?

Cars can be rented in several towns and cities across the Algarve, but the widest choice is usually found around Faro Airport. The best pick-up location mainly depends on when you will need the vehicle and how your holiday is organised.

You can collect a car as soon as you arrive at the airport, rent one later in a town or, when the service is available, have it delivered directly to your hotel, apartment or holiday home.

Renting a car at Faro Airport

For travellers who plan to use a car throughout their stay, Faro Airport is generally the most convenient choice. It is home to a large number of local, Portuguese and international car rental companies, with a wide range of vehicle categories.

You can collect the car after your flight lands and return it near the airport before departure. This avoids having to book a separate transfer between the terminal and your accommodation.

However, you should always check the exact pick-up arrangements. Depending on the company, the paperwork may be completed inside the terminal, at the P4 car park — also known as the RAC Car Park — or at an off-airport office reached by shuttle bus.

Renting a car in an Algarve town or city

A town-centre office may be more suitable when you only need a car for part of your stay. You can spend several days without a vehicle, then rent one to explore inland Algarve, remote beaches or another part of the region.

The choice is usually more limited than at Faro Airport. The number of vehicles, available categories and opening hours depend on the location and the time of year.

In Olhão, Cool Wheels Olhão is the only tourist car rental company based directly in the town. It is a useful option for visitors staying in Olhão without a car who would like to rent one for a day or two without travelling back to the airport.

Having the car delivered to your accommodation

Some companies can deliver the vehicle directly to a hotel, holiday complex, villa, apartment or holiday home. This may be convenient when you arrive by private transfer, Uber, Bolt or taxi.

Delivery is not always available. It may depend on the location of your accommodation, the requested time and the company’s availability. The arrangements should be confirmed in writing before you book.

Check the delivery address and time, where the contract will be signed and the vehicle inspected, and how the car will be collected or returned at the end of the rental period.

Which pick-up location should you choose?

The most convenient location depends on when you will need the car and where you are staying.

  • You need a car from the moment you arrive and throughout your trip: choose Faro Airport;
  • Your holiday is mainly based in one town: consider a local company for a few days;
  • You are arriving late or carrying a lot of luggage: check the opening hours and pick-up procedure carefully;
  • Your accommodation is far from a car rental office: ask whether vehicle delivery is available;
  • You are staying in Olhão: renting from Cool Wheels Olhão for a day or two can save you a trip back to the airport.

Amo-te Olhão tip: choose your pick-up location according to the days when you will actually use the car. Airport collection is generally easier for a longer rental, while a local office may be more convenient for a few day trips.

Collecting a rental car at Faro Airport

There are several ways to collect a rental car at Faro Airport. Some companies have a desk inside the terminal, others hand over vehicles at the P4 car park — also known as the RAC Car Park — while some provide a shuttle to their nearby off-airport premises.

A listing that says “pick-up at Faro Airport” does not necessarily mean the desk is inside the terminal. Always check the exact arrangements on your booking voucher before travelling.

The different types of pick-up at Faro Airport

Type of pick-up How does it work? What should you check before booking?
Desk inside the terminal The paperwork is completed inside the airport before you walk to the vehicle. Desk opening hours, possible waiting times and where the car is parked.
P4 / RAC Car Park A representative meets travellers in the car park and may complete the paperwork there. The exact meeting point, telephone number and how to recognise the representative.
Shuttle transfer A shuttle takes travellers to an off-airport office located nearby. The departure point, shuttle frequency, operating hours and return arrangements.

The P4 car park, also known as the RAC Car Park

P4 is used by several companies that do not have a desk inside the terminal. Depending on the documents supplied by the company, it may be referred to as P4, Car Park 4, RAC Car Park or the Rent-a-Car Area.

After collecting your luggage, doors B or C generally provide the easiest route towards this part of the airport. From there, follow the instructions supplied with your booking carefully.

Depending on the company, a representative may be waiting with a sign, standing by the vehicle or directing you to the shuttle. Keep the exact name of the company, its telephone number and your booking voucher close at hand.

Providing your flight number

You should enter your flight number when booking. This allows the car rental company to track your expected arrival time and see whether the flight is delayed.

However, providing a flight number does not guarantee that a representative will automatically wait beyond closing time. Some companies offer late pick-up, while others use a special procedure or impose a latest collection time.

What should you do if your flight is delayed or arrives late?

Contact the car rental company as soon as you know your flight is delayed. Use a written message where possible so that you have a record of the conversation and the solution offered.

Before travelling, also check the opening hours, how long the company will hold your booking and the procedure for evening arrivals or collection outside normal hours.

Documents to prepare before reaching the desk

To avoid problems at collection, prepare all the documents required for the main driver and any additional drivers in advance.

  • your DiscoverCars booking voucher;
  • the main driver’s original driving licence;
  • a valid identity card or passport;
  • the physical bank card required for the deposit;
  • the driving licence and ID of any additional drivers;
  • your flight number and the car rental company’s contact details;
  • written confirmation of any late arrival arrangements or permission to drive into Spain.

Check the return location before leaving

Before leaving the airport, ask where the car must be returned. The drop-off point may be different from the meeting point used on arrival, particularly when the vehicle is collected at P4 or from an off-airport company.

Also check the opening hours, key-return procedure and arrangements outside normal hours. This will help you allow enough time before your return flight.

Amo-te Olhão tip: do not rely on the words “Faro Airport” alone. Always check whether collection takes place inside the terminal, at the P4 car park or at an off-airport office reached by shuttle.

Faro Airport is served by many local, Portuguese and international car rental companies. The vehicles may look similar, but the terms often vary considerably when it comes to accepted bank cards, deposits, insurance, pick-up locations and permission to drive into Spain.

DiscoverCars lets you compare offers from several companies for your travel dates. The comparison site makes searching easier, but the vehicle is always supplied by a partner company that applies its own rental conditions.

Identify the company that will actually provide the car

Before confirming a booking, check the exact name of the company responsible for pick-up. This is the business that will inspect your documents, take the deposit, hand over the keys and check the vehicle when it is returned.

Two offers for a similar car category may be supplied by different companies with very different terms. Do not simply choose the first vehicle shown or rely on the photograph.

The main points to compare

For an initial shortlist, focus on the details that matter most:

  • the company’s name and customer rating;
  • the exact pick-up location: terminal, P4 car park or shuttle;
  • the bank card accepted for the deposit;
  • the deposit and excess amounts;
  • the insurance included and its main exclusions;
  • the fuel policy and permitted mileage;
  • the collection and return times;
  • whether driving into Spain is allowed when required.

These details are usually set out in the offer’s full terms and conditions. Read them before paying, as a card accepted for the online booking may still be refused by the supplier for the security deposit.

Read recent Google reviews

The ratings shown on DiscoverCars give you an initial idea of previous customers’ experiences. Amo-te Olhão also recommends checking the company’s recent Google reviews.

Give more weight to issues mentioned repeatedly than to a single isolated comment. The most useful reviews usually discuss how clearly the conditions were explained, waiting times, shuttle punctuality, vehicle condition, insurance offered at the desk, deposits and how damage was handled on return.

Make sure the reviews relate to the correct branch. The same company may have several offices, and service quality can vary by collection location.

Best Deal

Best Deal is an Algarve-based car rental company that has operated in the region for many years. It has an office near Faro Airport as well as locations in central Algarve.

It may suit travellers collecting a car in the airport area, as well as those staying around Quarteira, Vilamoura or Albufeira. Check the meeting point and transfer arrangements in the offer you select.

Luzcar

Luzcar is a local company based in western Algarve that also provides collection at Faro Airport. It may be particularly suitable for travellers heading towards Lagos, Portimão, Alvor, Sagres or the west coast.

Its collection process may differ from that of large international companies. Read the instructions carefully so that you know the meeting point, vehicle handover procedure and return arrangements.

Why does Amo-te Olhão recommend Best Deal and Luzcar?

Amo-te Olhão recommends Best Deal and Luzcar because of their local presence, experience in the Algarve and the feedback regularly shared by travellers.

This does not mean that every offer will suit every traveller. Conditions can vary according to the dates, vehicle category, bank card, insurance selected and your plans during the trip.

When Best Deal or Luzcar appear in DiscoverCars results, check that the listed supplier is the company you are looking for, then compare its conditions with the other available offers.

Amo-te Olhão tip: use DiscoverCars to identify available vehicles, then check the supplier’s name, full terms and recent Google reviews for the branch that will actually provide the car.

Which car should you rent for a trip to the Algarve?

The best vehicle depends on the number of travellers, your luggage, where you are staying and the journeys you are planning. For most holidays, a small or compact car is enough for travelling between towns, reaching beaches and visiting the Algarve’s main attractions.

As a general rule, choose the smallest car that can comfortably carry all passengers and their luggage. A compact model is easier to drive and park in the historic centres of Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Lagos, Silves and Loulé.

A small city car for a couple or a short stay

A small city car is usually suitable for one or two people travelling with limited luggage. It makes manoeuvring, parking and driving through narrow historic streets much easier.

Check the boot capacity before booking. A car advertised for four or five passengers may not have room for several large suitcases when all the seats are occupied.

A compact or family car

A compact or family car is often a better choice for families, groups of three or four people and travellers carrying a pushchair, beach equipment or several bags.

It offers more comfort on longer journeys while remaining reasonably easy to park. Check the actual boot capacity rather than relying only on the advertised number of seats.

Do you need to rent an SUV in the Algarve?

An SUV is not essential for exploring the Algarve. The main towns, beaches, villages and tourist attractions can all be reached by paved roads in a normal car.

A higher vehicle may be more comfortable for families or travellers who prefer an elevated driving position, but it will also be bulkier in narrow streets and small car parks.

Renting an SUV does not give you permission to drive on every track. Contracts often prohibit driving off paved roads or on certain unsealed routes. Damage in an unauthorised area may not be covered.

Is a normal car suitable for Monchique and the Vicentine Coast?

Yes. A normal car is perfectly suitable for reaching Monchique, Aljezur, Sagres, Vila do Bispo and the main destinations along the Vicentine Coast.

Some roads are narrow, winding or steep. A compact car can be more pleasant to drive than a very wide vehicle. Always respect the contract restrictions and avoid unauthorised tracks.

Booking an automatic car

Automatic vehicles are less common than manual cars. Drivers who are not comfortable using a manual gearbox should therefore select this filter clearly during their search.

Make sure “automatic” appears on the booking voucher. Booking early is advisable, especially during busy periods.

A seven-seater car

Seven-seater vehicles can be suitable for large families and groups of friends. However, luggage space is often very limited when all seven seats are in use.

Compare the number of passengers with the amount of luggage. In some situations, two smaller cars may be more practical than one seven-seater.

Renting an electric car in the Algarve

An electric car can work well for a holiday based around the main towns or accommodation with a charging point. Before booking, check the range, charging options along your route and the required battery level when returning the car.

Also ask whether a charging cable is supplied and whether you need a particular app or card to use public charging points.

For spontaneous day trips, long days on the road or a stay in a rural area, a petrol, diesel or hybrid car may be easier to manage.

Check the air conditioning

Air conditioning is particularly important during the hottest months. It should be listed among the vehicle’s features and tested before leaving the collection point.

Report any fault immediately, especially when your trip includes long journeys, young children or passengers who are sensitive to heat.

Baby seats and booster seats

Baby seats and booster seats should be booked in advance. At collection, check their condition, size and suitability for the child’s age and weight.

The car rental company may provide the seat without fully installing it. The driver should therefore make sure it is fitted securely before setting off.

Do not choose a car from the photograph alone

Offers usually show a particular model followed by the words “or similar”. The vehicle supplied may therefore be different from the one pictured while still belonging to the same category.

Focus on the guaranteed features: number of seats, number of doors, estimated luggage capacity, manual or automatic gearbox, air conditioning and fuel or power type.

Essential points to check

To choose a vehicle that genuinely suits your holiday, look beyond the model shown and check the following before booking.

  • the number of passengers;
  • the number and size of bags;
  • the boot capacity when all seats are in use;
  • manual or automatic transmission;
  • whether air conditioning is included;
  • the fuel or power type;
  • range and charging requirements for an electric car;
  • any baby seats or booster seats required;
  • restrictions on driving on unpaved roads;
  • how easy the vehicle will be to park in the places you plan to visit.

Amo-te Olhão tip: choose the smallest vehicle that can comfortably carry all passengers and their luggage. It will be easier to drive and park in historic centres and near the beaches.

Bank cards, deposits, excess and insurance: the essential points

Bank cards, deposits and insurance are among the most common causes of problems with car rental. A traveller may have paid for the booking online, only to discover at collection that the card is not accepted or that the deposit cannot be authorised.

Before booking, always check the conditions applied by the company that will actually provide the car. The payment made through DiscoverCars and the security deposit required at the desk are two separate transactions.

Debit card or credit card?

The word “DEBIT” or “CREDIT” is usually printed directly on the card. Visa and Mastercard only identify the payment network and do not tell you whether the card will be treated as a debit or credit card.

Many car rental companies accept only a credit card for the deposit. Others allow debit cards, sometimes with additional conditions linked to the vehicle category, insurance or the way the deposit is taken.

A card accepted for the online booking may therefore be refused at collection. Check the section of the supplier’s terms that lists accepted payment methods.

The card must be in the main driver’s name

In most cases, the card used for the deposit must be a physical card in the name of the main driver shown on the rental agreement.

A partner’s, friend’s or another passenger’s card may be refused even when that person is present at the desk. The name on the booking, driving licence, identity document and bank card should therefore match.

Do not rely solely on Apple Pay, Google Pay, a virtual card or a photograph of the card. The company may require the physical card to process the pre-authorisation.

Check your available card limit

The card must have enough available credit or funds for the deposit. Even when the amount is only pre-authorised, it temporarily reduces what remains available for other spending.

Before travelling, check your payment and authorisation limits with your bank. A temporary increase may be required and is best arranged before your trip.

Understanding the deposit, excess and insurance

Term What is it for? What should you check?
Deposit An amount temporarily blocked or charged as security for the rental. The amount, accepted card type, whether it is pre-authorised or charged, and how long release takes.
Excess The part of a covered loss or damage that may remain payable by the driver. The amount that applies to damage or theft and the circumstances in which it is charged.
Third-party liability insurance Covers injury or damage caused to other people or their property. Cover limits and any geographical restrictions.
Damage or theft protection Limits the driver’s liability for damage to or theft of the vehicle. The remaining excess, exclusions and the procedure to follow after an incident.
DiscoverCars Full Coverage May reimburse certain costs charged by the supplier following covered damage. Covered expenses, exclusions, required evidence and the reimbursement process.

Is the deposit blocked or actually charged?

A pre-authorisation is an amount temporarily reserved on the card. It is not intended to be collected when the car is returned in accordance with the contract, but it reduces the available card limit during the rental period.

Depending on the supplier, card type or terms of the offer, the deposit may instead be charged and later refunded after the vehicle is returned. The release or refund time depends on both the car rental company and the bank.

Check exactly how the deposit works and keep all documents supplied at collection and return.

What protection is usually included?

Car rental normally includes third-party liability insurance covering damage caused to others. It may also include damage protection, often known as CDW, as well as theft protection.

This does not necessarily mean the driver will have nothing to pay. An excess may still apply and certain parts of the vehicle may be excluded.

The most common exclusions

Contracts may exclude tyres, wheels, windows, mirrors, the roof, the underside of the vehicle, the interior, locks, keys or vehicle documents.

Cover may also become invalid if the driver is not listed on the agreement, drives on a prohibited road, leaves Portugal without permission or fails to follow the required procedure after an accident.

Read the detailed exclusions rather than relying only on phrases such as “full protection” or “fully comprehensive”.

How does DiscoverCars Full Coverage work?

DiscoverCars Full Coverage generally works on a reimbursement basis. After covered damage, the car rental company may first charge the driver, who must then submit the required documents to DiscoverCars.

This cover does not automatically remove the deposit required by the supplier. The driver must still present the bank card specified by the car rental company at collection.

Insurance bought directly from the supplier may work differently. Depending on the option, it may immediately reduce the excess or deposit. The two types of protection should not be confused.

Is insurance provided by your bank card enough?

Some bank cards include car rental insurance or excess reimbursement. The conditions may be strict, such as paying the full rental cost with that card, a maximum contract length, excluded vehicle categories or specific documents required for a claim.

This insurance does not usually remove the need to leave a deposit with the car rental company. Before relying on it, ask your bank or insurer for a detailed certificate setting out the cover and exclusions.

Be careful with insurance offered at the desk

At collection, staff may offer additional insurance intended to reduce the excess, lower the deposit or cover more types of damage.

Before accepting it, ask exactly what it changes compared with the protection already included or purchased through DiscoverCars. Check the new deposit amount, the remaining excess and the exclusions.

Read every line of the agreement before signing to make sure no option has been added without your consent.

Checks to make before booking

These details determine the conditions under which the car will be handed over and the level of protection you will have during the rental.

  • whether “DEBIT” or “CREDIT” is printed on the card;
  • the type of card accepted by the supplier;
  • whether a physical card is compulsory;
  • whose name must appear on the bank card;
  • the amount and operation of the deposit;
  • the excess payable for damage or theft;
  • the insurance included in the rental;
  • exclusions applying to specific parts of the vehicle;
  • whether the selected protection applies directly or by reimbursement;
  • any cover offered by your bank card.

Amo-te Olhão tip: never confuse the booking payment, the deposit and the excess. Check that the supplier will accept your card and save a copy of the terms that applied on the day you booked.

Extra charges and checks to make before booking

When renting a car in the Algarve, the price shown at the start of the search does not always include every amount that may eventually be charged. Optional extras, service fees or special conditions may be added depending on the supplier, the driver and how the vehicle will be used.

These costs are sometimes described as “hidden fees”, but they are usually listed in the rental conditions. The main problem is that they are easy to miss when a booking is made too quickly.

The most common extra charges

Situation Why might a charge apply? How can you avoid it?
Insurance added at the desk The supplier offers extra protection to reduce the excess or deposit. Check the protection you already have and ask exactly what the new option changes before accepting it.
Additional driver Every person authorised to drive must be listed on the agreement. Add all required drivers when booking and check whether the option is included.
Young or senior driver Some companies apply special conditions according to age. Enter the main driver’s exact age during the search.
Collection or return outside opening hours Late collection or a very early return may require special arrangements. Compare your flight times with the office opening hours and obtain written confirmation.
Missing fuel The supplier may charge for fuel and add a service fee when the required level is not met. Choose a full-to-full policy, refuel before returning the car and keep the receipt.
Special cleaning Excessive sand, rubbish, stains, smells or pet hair may result in a cleaning charge. Empty the vehicle, shake out the mats and return the interior in a reasonable condition.
Exceeding the mileage allowance Some offers limit the distance that can be driven during the rental. Check whether mileage is unlimited and estimate your planned journeys.
Driving into Spain Permission, extended insurance or a cross-border option may be required. Declare the journey before booking and obtain written authorisation.
Tolls, fines and administration fees The supplier may charge an administration fee in addition to the toll or fine itself. Follow the traffic rules and ask how the Via Verde device is billed.
Lost keys or documents Replacement electronic keys or vehicle documents may be excluded from insurance. Keep the keys and documents safe and contact the supplier immediately if they are lost.

The fuel policy

A full-to-full fuel policy is generally the simplest to understand. You collect the car with a full tank and return it full.

At collection, check that the actual fuel level matches the agreement. If it does not, photograph the gauge and ask for the record to be corrected before leaving.

Before returning the car, refuel near the office, keep the petrol station receipt and photograph the fuel gauge after parking.

The mileage allowance

Not every offer includes unlimited mileage. There may be a daily or total allowance, with an extra charge for each kilometre above the limit.

This is particularly important if you plan to travel across the whole Algarve, drive to Lisbon or make several long day trips.

Optional extras and equipment

Baby seats, booster seats, additional drivers, toll devices and out-of-hours services may all be offered as separate extras.

Before paying, make sure every item you actually need appears on the booking voucher. When signing the agreement, also check that no unrequested service has been added.

Cancellation and amendment conditions

Cancellation terms vary according to the offer and when the request is made. Check the deadline for cancelling or changing the booking without losing any amount already paid.

You should also understand the procedure for a flight change, changing the main driver or extending the rental period.

Checklist before confirming your booking

Category Points to check
Supplier and collection Exact supplier name, recent Google reviews, desk inside the terminal, P4 car park or shuttle, opening hours and delay procedure.
Payment and cover Accepted debit or credit card, physical card in the main driver’s name, deposit, excess, insurance and exclusions.
Vehicle Category, manual or automatic gearbox, air conditioning, boot capacity, fuel, mileage and booked equipment.
Drivers Age, how long the licence has been held, main driver and any additional drivers.
Planned use Driving into Spain, permitted roads, one-way rental, tolls and possible return in another town.
Vehicle return Address, opening hours, fuel policy, out-of-hours return and key-drop procedure.

Keep a copy of the conditions

After booking, keep the DiscoverCars voucher, the full terms of the offer and all messages exchanged with the supplier. Screenshots can be useful if the displayed information changes before collection.

Any special arrangement, including late arrival, delivery to your accommodation, driving into Spain or returning the car in another town, should ideally be confirmed in writing.

Amo-te Olhão tip: do not look only at the vehicle and price shown in the results. Open the full terms, check every option and save a copy of all the information that applies to your booking.

Collecting and returning the car: essential checks

Even when you have checked the booking conditions carefully, a few precautions are still essential when collecting and returning the car. They allow you to report any issue immediately and keep evidence in case of a later dispute.

It is worth spending a few minutes inspecting the vehicle, even after a long journey or before a flight. A pre-existing scratch, an incorrect fuel level or faulty equipment may be difficult to challenge if it was not documented.

Compare the rental agreement with the booking voucher

Before signing the agreement supplied by the company, compare it with your DiscoverCars voucher. Check the vehicle category, dates, times, main driver, additional drivers, insurance, deposit, fuel policy and selected extras.

No insurance, equipment or additional service should appear unless it was clearly requested and accepted. If anything is different, ask for an explanation before signing the agreement or approving a card payment.

Checks to make at collection and return

What to check At collection At return
Bodywork Inspect the doors, bumpers, mirrors, roof and lower parts of the vehicle. Walk around the car again after parking it.
Wheels, tyres and windows Look for scratches, chips, cracks and visible signs of wear. Photograph all four wheels, the windscreen and the other windows again.
Interior Check the seats, mats, dashboard, boot and interior trim. Remove rubbish and personal belongings, then photograph the interior.
Fuel Compare the gauge with the level recorded on the agreement. Follow the fuel policy, photograph the gauge and keep the final refuelling receipt.
Mileage Photograph the odometer before leaving. Photograph the final mileage after parking the vehicle.
Equipment Test the air conditioning, lights, wipers, windows and any booked accessories. Make sure no equipment or vehicle documents have been packed in your luggage.
Documents Keep a copy of the agreement, condition report and breakdown assistance details. Ask for a document or email confirming the return.

Photograph and film the car

Take detailed photographs of every side of the vehicle, then record one continuous video while slowly walking around it. The images should show the bumpers, doors, mirrors, wheels, tyres, windows and roof.

Photograph the registration plate as well so that the files can clearly be linked to the rental vehicle. Keep the original files with their date and time information.

If collection takes place in a dark car park, use your phone light and move close enough to any marks for them to be clearly visible.

Make sure every existing mark is recorded

Every scratch, chip, dent or damaged item should appear on the condition report supplied at collection. Even if an employee says a mark is too small to matter, ask for it to be added to the report or confirmed in writing.

A verbal comment alone offers little protection if there is a disagreement on return. Do not leave until any important issue has been recorded.

Test the equipment before setting off

Start the car and make sure no unusual warning light remains on. Test the air conditioning, headlights, indicators, wipers, electric windows and door locks.

If you booked baby seats, booster seats or other accessories, check their condition and installation before leaving the collection point.

Also check that the warning triangle and reflective vest are present, and ask where they are stored.

Ask what to do in the event of a breakdown or accident

Save the assistance number and ask what steps to follow after a breakdown, puncture, accident, broken window or warning light.

The supplier normally needs to be contacted before any repair, recovery or outside assistance is arranged. After an accident, an accident statement, police report, photographs or other evidence may be required.

If you plan to drive into Spain, check that the assistance number works from abroad and that the same procedure applies.

During the rental

Keep fuel and toll receipts, as well as any evidence related to an incident. In the event of damage, a breakdown or an unusual warning light, contact the company promptly and communicate in writing where possible.

Do not have the car repaired or arrange recovery yourself without the supplier’s approval, except in an absolute emergency. An unauthorised intervention may not be reimbursed.

Preparing to return the car

Check the exact return address, opening hours and key-return procedure in advance. If you collected the car at P4 or from an off-airport office, the return point may be different from the meeting point used on arrival.

Allow enough time to refuel, remove rubbish, reach the office and complete the inspection. Returning the car at the very last minute before a flight is not advisable.

Returning the car with an employee present

Where possible, ask an employee to inspect the vehicle in your presence. If no new damage is found, request a document or email confirming that it was returned in the expected condition.

Simply handing over the keys does not necessarily mean the inspection is complete. Keep your photographs, videos and documents until the deposit has been released.

Returning the car outside opening hours

When a self-service return is arranged, park in the specified area, lock the doors correctly and leave the keys only in the place indicated by the supplier.

Photograph the vehicle, its parking space, signs identifying the car park, the dashboard, fuel gauge and mileage. Where possible, also keep proof that the keys were deposited.

Then send the company a message confirming the return time and location. Check the terms to see until what point the vehicle remains the rentalr’s responsibility.

Keep your evidence after the rental

Do not immediately delete photographs, videos, the agreement, emails or receipts. Some charges may be issued after the return, particularly for tolls, fines, damage or a vehicle returned without an immediate inspection.

Check your card statement to confirm that the deposit has been released and that there are no unexplained charges. If an amount is taken, ask the supplier for a detailed explanation and supporting evidence.

Collection and return checklist

Before leaving the collection point Before returning the car
✓ Compare the agreement with the booking
✓ Photograph and film the vehicle
✓ Have all existing damage recorded
✓ Check the fuel level and mileage
✓ Test the air conditioning and equipment
✓ Check all booked accessories
✓ Save the assistance number
✓ Follow the fuel policy
✓ Keep the final refuelling receipt
✓ Remove rubbish and personal belongings
✓ Photograph and film the vehicle again
✓ Photograph the fuel gauge and mileage
✓ Ask for confirmation of the return
✓ Keep all evidence until the deposit is released

Amo-te Olhão tip: record a complete video of the car at collection and return, even when no damage is visible. Keep all documents and original files until the deposit has been released.

Motorways, tolls and driving into Spain

Driving around the Algarve is relatively straightforward. The A22 motorway makes it quick to cross the region from east to west, while the EN125 main road serves the principal towns and cities along the coast.

However, the toll rules have changed recently. You should also take a few precautions when planning to cross the Spanish border in a rental car.

Is the A22 motorway free?

Yes. Tolls on the A22 motorway, also known as the Via do Infante, were removed on 1 January 2025. The motorway remains toll-free in 2026.

You no longer need to pay to use the A22 between the Spanish border, Tavira, Olhão, Faro, Loulé, Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos.

Some old toll gantries may still be visible above the road. Their presence does not mean you will be charged for travelling on the A22.

Good to know: if all your journeys are within the Algarve and use only the A22, you do not need a toll device for this motorway. An option offered by the car rental company may still be useful if you plan to use other Portuguese motorways that remain subject to tolls.

A22 or EN125: which road should you take?

The A22 is generally the fastest option for longer journeys between eastern and western Algarve. It bypasses urban areas and many of the busiest parts of the coast.

The EN125 passes through or alongside more towns and villages. It can be useful for local journeys, but traffic is often heavier, especially in summer and during peak hours.

For journeys between Olhão and Lagos, Faro and Albufeira, or towards the Spanish border, the A22 is generally more comfortable. To reach a beach, restaurant or neighbouring town, the EN125 and local roads may be more direct.

Do other Portuguese motorways still have tolls?

Removing tolls from the A22 does not mean every motorway in Portugal is now free. Journeys to Lisbon, the Alentejo, Porto or other regions may use roads that are still tolled.

The A2, commonly used between the Algarve and Lisbon, includes tolled sections. Depending on the route, payment may be made at a traditional toll booth or through an electronic system.

Before leaving the Algarve, check your planned roads and ask the car rental company how any tolls will be charged. Do not assume that every journey is covered simply because the vehicle has an electronic device.

How does Via Verde work in a rental car?

Many Portuguese rental cars are fitted with an electronic Via Verde device. It automatically records journeys on certain motorways, bridges and other paid infrastructure.

Billing arrangements depend on the supplier. The company may charge an activation or device-rental fee, then bill the tolls actually used separately.

Before signing the agreement, ask whether the device is active, how tolls will be charged, whether administration fees apply and when the payment will appear on your bank card.

Keep your rental documents and monitor transactions after returning the car, as some tolls may be charged several days later.

Can you drive a rental car from the Algarve into Spain?

Travellers staying in eastern Algarve can easily reach Ayamonte, Huelva and Seville. The Spanish border is reached via the A22, which continues as the A49 in Spain.

However, do not cross the border before checking the rental conditions. The supplier must be informed whenever the vehicle will be used in another country, even for a one-day trip.

Depending on the company and offer, driving into Spain may be included, require prior authorisation or involve an extra cross-border option. Certain vehicle categories may also be excluded from international travel.

Why should you request written permission?

Written permission confirms that the vehicle may legally be used in Spain and that the necessary documents are in the car.

It also allows you to check that the insurance, damage and theft protection, and roadside assistance remain valid after crossing the border.

Third-party liability insurance valid across the European Union does not automatically mean that every optional protection in the rental agreement applies in the same way abroad.

Ask for written confirmation that driving into Spain is authorised and keep it with the rental agreement throughout the trip.

Does roadside assistance also work in Spain?

Before crossing the border, check that roadside assistance covers breakdowns and accidents in Spain. Ask which number to call and whether a different procedure applies from abroad.

You should also find out whether the agreement covers towing, a replacement vehicle, return to Portugal and any accommodation or transport costs if the car cannot be driven.

After an accident, contact the supplier immediately and follow the procedure set out in the agreement. Photographs, an accident statement or police attendance may be required to preserve the cover.

Returning the car in another country

Permission to drive in Spain does not automatically allow you to return the car there. Unless a specific arrangement has been agreed, the vehicle must be returned to the stated location in Portugal.

Returning a car in another country is an international one-way rental. This service is much less common and must be confirmed when booking.

Checks to make before driving to Spain

Before crossing the border, make sure the agreement, insurance and assistance all permit the vehicle to be used in Spain.

  • tell the supplier that you plan to drive into Spain;
  • obtain written permission;
  • check that the insurance remains valid abroad;
  • confirm the roadside assistance cover;
  • keep the agreement and vehicle documents with you;
  • save the assistance number that can be called from Spain;
  • check how tolls work on your route in Spain;
  • confirm that the car must be returned in Portugal.

Amo-te Olhão tip: the A22 is now toll-free, but motorways outside the Algarve may still be charged. For a trip to Spain, always obtain written permission from the supplier and check that your insurance and roadside assistance remain valid across the border.

Driving licences, age requirements and special situations

Holding a licence that legally allows you to drive in Portugal does not automatically mean a car rental company will accept the booking. Each supplier also applies its own conditions regarding the driver’s age, how long the licence has been held, the documents presented and the vehicle categories available.

These requirements must be checked for the main driver and for every other person who may drive during the trip.

Is a European driving licence valid in Portugal?

A valid driving licence issued in a country of the European Union or European Economic Area can be used in Portugal. It must cover the category of vehicle being rented and remain valid throughout the rental period.

The driver must present the original driving licence at collection. A photograph, photocopy or document stored on a phone will not usually replace the physical licence required by the supplier.

Check the expiry date before travelling as well. A licence that expires during the trip may no longer allow you to drive or continue the rental.

Do you need an International Driving Permit?

For licences issued outside the European Union, the requirements depend on the issuing country, the agreements in force with Portugal and the supplier’s own conditions.

An International Driving Permit may be required, particularly when the original licence does not use the Latin alphabet or its format is difficult for the company to understand.

An International Driving Permit is an official translation that accompanies the national licence. It cannot be used on its own and never replaces the original document.

If you are unsure, contact the supplier before booking and state which country issued the licence. Ask for written confirmation of the documents you will need to present in Faro.

What is the minimum age for renting a car?

The legal driving age in Portugal is 18, but car rental companies may set a higher minimum age.

Depending on the supplier and vehicle category, some cars may only be available to drivers aged 21, 23 or 25 and over. A young-driver fee or different deposit may also apply.

Enter the main driver’s exact age during the search so that the offers shown genuinely match their profile.

Is there a maximum age?

Not every supplier sets an upper age limit. However, some companies may apply special conditions to senior drivers, request an additional document or restrict access to certain vehicle categories.

Travellers affected should check the age conditions before paying rather than waiting until they reach the desk.

How long must you have held your licence?

Most companies require drivers to have held their licence for a minimum period. This can vary according to the supplier, the driver’s age and the vehicle booked.

Check the original issue date even if the licence has recently been renewed or replaced. If the new document does not clearly show how long you have been licensed, ask the supplier what additional proof it accepts.

Provisional, lost or recently renewed licences

A provisional licence, loss declaration or temporary certificate is not automatically recognised when travelling in another European country. A supplier may also refuse to hand over the car when the driver cannot present the final original licence.

If your licence has been lost, stolen or is being renewed, contact the supplier before travelling. Do not assume that a document accepted in your country of residence will also be accepted in Portugal.

Adding an additional driver

Anyone who may drive the car must be added to the rental agreement. An additional driver must present their original licence and an identity document, and meet the same age and licence-history requirements as the main driver.

Allowing someone who is not listed on the agreement to drive may invalidate parts of the insurance and leave the rentalr responsible for any damage.

The main driver normally needs to be present at collection even when another driver will use the vehicle regularly.

Must the name match on every document?

The name on the booking, driving licence, identity document and bank card used for the deposit should match as closely as possible.

If there is a difference because of marriage, a double surname or a recent legal name change, bring a document explaining it and contact the company before travelling.

An error in the main driver’s name should be corrected before collection. It should not be treated as a harmless typo.

Renting an adapted vehicle

Travellers who need an adapted vehicle, special controls, additional assistance or substantial space for a wheelchair should make the request well in advance.

This equipment is not available from every company or for every vehicle category. Availability, installation and collection arrangements must be confirmed directly with the supplier.

Documents required for every driver

To ensure that everyone listed on the agreement is allowed to drive, prepare the required documents for each driver in advance.

  • an original and valid driving licence;
  • a valid identity card or passport;
  • an International Driving Permit when required;
  • additional proof if the length of time the licence has been held is not clearly shown;
  • any document explaining a difference in name;
  • confirmation that additional drivers have been added to the agreement.

Amo-te Olhão tip: check the age and licence-history requirements for every driver. Always bring the original documents and request written confirmation from the supplier if a licence is non-European, provisional or recently renewed.

What can you visit in the Algarve with a rental car?

A car allows you to discover a more varied side of the Algarve beyond the main seaside resorts. It makes travelling between coastal towns, inland villages, quieter beaches, wineries and the landscapes of the Vicentine Coast much easier.

There is no need to cross the entire region in a single day. To enjoy each stop properly, group places by geographical area and adapt the itinerary to the length of your stay.

Discovering eastern Algarve

Eastern Algarve, between Faro and the Spanish border, is known for its historic towns, long sandy beaches and Ria Formosa landscapes. Distances are relatively short, making it possible to combine several stops in one day.

Places worth visiting include Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Cacela Velha, Vila Real de Santo António and Castro Marim.

  • Faro: old town, marina, cathedral and a walk around the city walls;
  • Olhão: markets, historic centre, waterfront and boats to the Ria Formosa islands;
  • Tavira: bridges, old streets, castle and access to Tavira Island;
  • Cacela Velha: a small village overlooking the lagoon, with one of the finest views in eastern Algarve;
  • Castro Marim: castle, fortifications and salt-marsh landscapes;
  • Vila Real de Santo António: a town centre built around Praça Marquês de Pombal and a riverside walk along the Guadiana.

To visit the islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol or Tavira, leave the car near the ferry terminal. Private vehicles cannot access these islands.

Exploring central Algarve

Central Algarve includes several seaside resorts, cliff-backed beaches and lively towns. It is easy to reach from Faro, Olhão, Loulé or Albufeira.

Loulé is worth visiting for its municipal market, historic centre and castle. Further south, Quarteira and Vilamoura offer very different atmospheres, with a seafront promenade, beaches, marina and restaurants.

Around Albufeira, a car makes it easy to visit several beaches separated by cliffs, particularly around Galé, São Rafael, Olhos de Água and Falésia. In summer, arrive early because car parks near the coast can fill up quickly.

Travellers interested in history and architecture can also visit Estoi, known for its palace, gardens and the Roman ruins of Milreu.

Discovering Lagos, Sagres and western Algarve

Western Algarve is characterised by cliffs, rock formations, coves and wide Atlantic views. A car makes organising visits in this part of the region considerably easier.

In Lagos, you can explore the historic centre, marina and beaches around Ponta da Piedade. Some areas become very busy in high season, so it may be easier to park outside the centre and continue on foot.

Further west, Sagres has a wilder atmosphere. The fortress, Cape St Vincent and the surrounding beaches are the main stops in this area.

Winds can be particularly strong around Sagres and Cape St Vincent. Take care when opening car doors and never leave loose items unattended near the cliffs.

Driving along the Vicentine Coast

The Vicentine Coast stretches north from Sagres and feels much wilder than the southern Algarve coastline. Its beaches, cliffs and villages are more spread out, making a car especially useful.

The areas around Vila do Bispo, Carrapateira, Bordeira, Arrifana and Aljezur can be included in a one-day or multi-day route. Main roads are paved, but some beach access roads are narrow, steep or restricted.

Avoid tracks prohibited by the rental agreement. Having an SUV does not guarantee that off-road driving is allowed or covered by the insurance.

Visiting Silves and inland Algarve

A car also allows you to leave the coast and explore the landscapes and villages of inland Algarve. This part of the region is generally quieter and has a very different atmosphere from the seaside resorts.

Silves is one of the main stops, with its castle, cathedral and narrow streets. Further north, the road towards Monchique passes through hilly, wooded scenery.

In Monchique, visitors can explore the village, Caldas de Monchique and the roads climbing into the hills. Driving requires more attention because of bends, slopes and the possible presence of cyclists.

Other villages such as Alte, Salir, São Brás de Alportel and Querença reveal a more rural Algarve, with small squares, fountains, craftspeople, traditional restaurants and rolling landscapes.

Visiting Algarve wineries

A car is especially useful for visiting Algarve wineries, many of which are located outside town centres. Producers can be found around Lagoa, Silves, Portimão, Lagos, Tavira and inland areas.

Tours and tastings usually need to be booked in advance. When a tasting is planned, choose a designated driver who will not drink alcohol or arrange a transfer.

Day-trip ideas from Faro or Olhão

To organise your days without adding unnecessary driving, here are a few route ideas grouped by area.

  • One day in the east: Tavira, Cacela Velha, Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António;
  • One day inland: Estoi, São Brás de Alportel, Salir and Loulé;
  • One day around Silves: Silves, Monchique and Caldas de Monchique;
  • One day in the west: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade, Sagres and Cape St Vincent;
  • One day on the Vicentine Coast: Vila do Bispo, Carrapateira, Bordeira and Aljezur.

A day trip from Olhão to Lagos, Sagres or the Vicentine Coast involves a lot of driving. To explore western Algarve at a more relaxed pace, consider spending one night in that part of the region.

Planning your driving days well

Before each trip, check the realistic journey time, parking options and opening hours of the places you plan to visit. In summer, roads and car parks near beaches can be extremely busy.

Avoid leaving luggage, electronic devices or visible belongings in the car. When changing accommodation, visit attractions after dropping your bags somewhere secure whenever possible.

Bring water, sun protection and suitable footwear when your plans include cliffs, walking trails or beaches reached on foot from the car park.

Amo-te Olhão tip: group visits by area rather than adding several long drives. Eastern Algarve, inland Algarve, Lagos and the Vicentine Coast each deserve a full day if you want to enjoy the stops properly.

Exploring the Algarve without a car: what are the alternatives?

It is perfectly possible to stay in the Algarve without renting a car, especially when your accommodation is in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos. Walking, trains, ferries, Uber, Bolt, taxis and private transfers can all be combined according to the day and the places you want to visit.

This approach is particularly suitable for travellers who want to enjoy one town, visit the Ria Formosa islands or avoid the practicalities of driving, parking, leaving a deposit and returning a vehicle.

It becomes less convenient when you want to explore inland Algarve, visit several remote beaches in one day or reach places with limited public transport.

The main ways to get around without a car

Option Particularly useful for Main limitations
Walking Exploring historic centres, markets, marinas and waterfronts. Not suitable for long distances, very hot weather or accommodation outside town.
Train Travelling between coastal towns and cities, including Faro, Olhão, Tavira and Lagos. Timetables require planning and some stations are far from beaches or visitor areas.
Bus Certain journeys between places not directly connected by train. Frequencies vary and travel can be more difficult to organise at weekends or in the evening.
Ferry or water taxi Reaching the islands and beaches of the Ria Formosa. Seasonal timetables, with services depending on the destination and navigation conditions.
Uber or Bolt The airport, restaurants, nearby beaches, railway stations and occasional short journeys. Availability and waiting times vary, especially in rural areas and during busy periods.
Taxi Local journeys, early-morning departures and travel without using an app. Availability should be checked in advance in smaller towns and villages.
Private transfer Travelling directly from the airport to your accommodation, especially with children or a lot of luggage. Advance booking is usually required.
Organised excursion Visiting wine regions, inland Algarve, Benagil, Sagres and other places without driving. The route, timings and duration are set by the organiser.

Travelling by train along the coast

The train is one of the most practical ways to travel between several towns and cities along the Algarve coast. The stations in Faro, Olhão and Tavira are within a reasonable distance of their historic centres, making day trips easy to organise.

You can also travel to western Algarve, including Portimão and Lagos. The journey may take longer than driving, however, and some stations are some distance from the beaches or main visitor areas.

Before setting off, check both the outward and return timetables and the exact location of the arrival station. A station named after a town is not necessarily in its centre.

Using regional buses

Buses complement the rail network and serve some towns, beaches and destinations that are not directly connected by train.

They often require more planning. Frequencies vary according to the route, season, day of the week and time of day. A trip involving several connections can quickly become difficult to organise.

For a specific day trip, check the return timetable before leaving and have an alternative in case of a delay or cancellation.

Reaching the Ria Formosa islands

You do not need a car to discover the Ria Formosa islands. From Olhão, ferries travel to Armona, Culatra and Farol. Other services from Faro, Tavira, Fuseta and Cabanas provide access to beaches and islands across the lagoon.

Private vehicles do not circulate on these islands. Even with a rental car, you must park near the ferry terminal and continue by boat and on foot.

Timetables change according to the season. To check the next departure from Olhão, visit NextFerry before heading to the ferry terminal.

Uber, Bolt and taxis

Uber and Bolt are useful for travelling to Faro Airport, a railway station, restaurant, beach or accommodation located a few kilometres outside a town centre.

They can also complement a day trip by train. For example, you can travel to a town by public transport and then use a ride-hailing service to reach a more distant beach or attraction.

Availability is not the same everywhere. In inland areas, at isolated beaches, late at night or during a particularly busy period, waits may be longer and an immediate vehicle cannot be guaranteed.

For an early-morning journey to the airport, booking a taxi or transfer in advance is safer than relying entirely on a last-minute app request.

Booking a private transfer

A private transfer takes you directly to your accommodation after arriving in Faro, without having to complete car rental paperwork after the flight.

This is particularly comfortable for families, groups, travellers carrying several bags and anyone arriving late in the evening.

A transfer can be used only on arrival and departure days, then combined with walking, trains, ferries or a few days of car rental.

Joining an organised excursion

Organised excursions make it possible to visit places that are difficult to reach without a car. They may include transport, a guide, several stops and sometimes an activity such as a tasting, boat trip or walk.

This can be a good way to discover Sagres, the Vicentine Coast, Algarve wineries, inland areas or certain sea caves without driving or arranging parking.

Before booking, check the departure point, total duration, places actually visited, language used and cancellation conditions.

Combining different forms of transport

A car-free holiday does not have to rely on one type of transport. Combining several options according to your plans is often easier.

  • For exploring a town or city: walking and train;
  • For reaching the islands: walking, ferry or water taxi;
  • For a more distant beach: train followed by Uber, Bolt or taxi;
  • For arrival and departure: private transfer, taxi, Uber or Bolt;
  • For a day inland: organised excursion or short-term car rental;
  • For several days of exploring: rent a car only for that part of the trip.

This works well for many holidays, but becomes less practical when journeys are more frequent, more distant or difficult to plan.

When is a car still the better option?

Despite the alternatives, a car is generally more convenient for remote accommodation, a trip with young children, plans involving several beaches or repeated journeys into inland Algarve.

It is also recommended for freely exploring Monchique, Alte, Salir, the Vicentine Coast or several villages in one day.

The choice does not have to be entirely between a holiday with a car and one without. Renting a vehicle for only a few days is often the best compromise.

Amo-te Olhão tip: for a stay in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos, first plan the days that can be managed on foot, by train or by ferry. Then rent a car only for the trips where the extra freedom is genuinely useful.

FAQ – Car rental in the Algarve and at Faro Airport

Faro Airport pick-up, rental companies, bank cards, deposits, insurance, tolls or driving into Spain: here are the answers to the most common questions about renting a car in the Algarve.

Planning your car rental

Is it essential to rent a car in the Algarve?

No. You do not necessarily need a car when staying in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos. Walking, trains, ferries, Uber, Bolt and taxis are enough for many journeys.

A car is mainly useful for exploring inland Algarve, the Vicentine Coast, several remote beaches or accommodation in a more isolated location.

Where is the best place to rent a car in the Algarve?

Faro Airport generally offers the widest choice of vehicles and car rental companies.

A town-centre rental office may be more convenient when you only need a car for a few days rather than for your entire stay.

Can you rent a car for only a few days?

Yes. This is particularly suitable for travellers staying in a town centre who only want a car to explore inland Algarve, western Algarve or several more distant beaches.

You can reach your accommodation by Uber, Bolt, taxi or private transfer, then rent a vehicle only for the part of the trip when it will genuinely be useful.

Which car rental company should you choose at Faro Airport?

No single company is right for every situation. Amo-te Olhão recommends Best Deal and Luzcar, two companies based in the Algarve.

Before booking, always check the conditions of the specific offer and read recent Google reviews for the branch that will actually provide the vehicle.

Can you compare car rentals with DiscoverCars?

Yes. DiscoverCars lets you compare vehicles offered by several rental companies.

However, you should always identify the supplier that will actually provide the car and read its conditions regarding bank cards, the deposit, insurance, mileage and the collection location.

Can you rent an automatic car in the Algarve?

Yes, but automatic cars are generally less common than manual vehicles.

Select the automatic transmission filter during your search and make sure it is clearly stated on the booking voucher before confirming the reservation.

Do you need an SUV to explore the Algarve?

No. A normal car is suitable for reaching the main towns, beaches, Monchique, Sagres and destinations along the Vicentine Coast.

The main roads are paved, and renting an SUV does not automatically allow you to drive on unpaved tracks or roads prohibited by the rental agreement.

Bank cards, deposits and insurance

Can you use a debit card for the deposit?

It depends on the rental company and the selected offer. Some suppliers accept debit cards, while others require a credit card.

The card normally needs to be physical, in the main driver’s name and have a sufficient available limit for the security deposit.

Does booking online remove the need for a deposit?

No. Paying for the online booking and leaving the security deposit required by the rental company are two separate transactions.

A card may be accepted for the online payment and then refused by the supplier for the deposit at collection.

What is the difference between the deposit and the excess?

The deposit is an amount temporarily blocked or charged as security for the rental.

The excess is the amount that may remain payable by the driver following covered damage or theft.

Does DiscoverCars Full Coverage remove the deposit?

No. DiscoverCars Full Coverage generally works by reimbursing certain eligible costs after covered damage.

The rental company may still require its usual security deposit when handing over the vehicle.

Does the bank card have to be in the main driver’s name?

In most cases, yes. The physical card used for the security deposit must usually be in the name of the main driver shown on the rental agreement.

A card belonging to a partner, friend or another passenger may be refused, even when that person is present at the rental desk.

Faro Airport pick-up and documents

Do you always collect the car inside the Faro Airport terminal?

No. Depending on the supplier, collection may take place inside the terminal, at the P4 car park — also known as the RAC Car Park — or at an off-airport office reached by shuttle.

The exact collection location and instructions should appear on your booking voucher.

What should you do if your flight is delayed?

Provide your flight number when booking and contact the rental company as soon as you know about the delay.

Also check the office closing time, how long the company will hold the booking and the procedure for late arrivals.

Is a French or other EU driving licence valid in Portugal?

Yes. A valid driving licence issued by a country in the European Union or European Economic Area can be used in Portugal.

You must present the original physical document when collecting the vehicle.

Do you need an International Driving Permit in the Algarve?

Not when using a driving licence issued in the European Union.

For a licence issued elsewhere, the requirements depend on the issuing country and the rental company’s conditions. An International Driving Permit must always be accompanied by the original national driving licence.

What documents do you need to collect a rental car?

You will normally need the booking voucher, the main driver’s original driving licence, a valid identity card or passport and the physical bank card required for the deposit.

Any additional driver must also present their original driving licence and identity document.

Tolls and driving into Spain

Do you have to pay tolls on the A22?

No. Tolls on the A22 motorway, also known as the Via do Infante, were removed on 1 January 2025.

Other Portuguese motorways may still be tolled, particularly when travelling towards Lisbon or another part of the country.

Do you need a Via Verde toll device in the Algarve?

You do not need a toll device when all your journeys remain within the Algarve and use only the A22.

A Via Verde device may still be useful when travelling on other Portuguese motorways, bridges or roads that remain subject to tolls.

Can you drive into Spain in a car rented in Portugal?

Yes, when the rental company allows it.

You should declare the journey before departure and check that the insurance, roadside assistance and vehicle documents remain valid in Spain. Written confirmation from the supplier is strongly recommended.

Can you return the rental car in Spain?

Permission to drive into Spain does not automatically allow you to return the car there.

An international one-way rental must be specifically authorised and confirmed when booking. Otherwise, the vehicle must be returned to the agreed location in Portugal.

Collection and return checks

What should you check before leaving the collection point?

Compare the rental agreement with the booking voucher, then photograph the bodywork, wheels, windows, interior, fuel gauge and mileage.

Make sure every existing scratch, dent or mark is recorded on the vehicle condition report before you leave.

Should you photograph and film the rental car?

Yes. Take clear photographs of every side of the car and record a continuous video while walking around the vehicle.

Keep the original files until the security deposit has been fully released.

What should you do before returning the car?

Follow the fuel policy, remove rubbish and personal belongings, then photograph the vehicle, fuel gauge and mileage again.

Where possible, ask an employee to inspect the vehicle in your presence and request written confirmation that the car has been returned.

What should you do when returning the car outside opening hours?

Park in the designated area, lock the vehicle and leave the keys only in the place specified by the rental company.

Photograph the car, its parking space, the dashboard, fuel gauge and mileage, and send the supplier a written message confirming the return time and location.

Key point: car rental conditions always depend on the company that actually supplies the vehicle. Check the required documents, accepted bank card, deposit, excess, insurance and exact collection location before confirming your booking.

Renting a car in the Algarve: which option should you choose?

Renting a car in the Algarve gives you the freedom to discover beaches, inland villages, Monchique, Sagres, the Vicentine Coast and places with limited public transport. It is particularly useful when your accommodation is outside a town centre or your plans include several parts of the region.

However, a car is not essential for every holiday. Travellers staying in central Faro, Olhão, Tavira or Lagos can easily organise part of their trip on foot, by train or ferry, or with Uber, Bolt, a taxi or a private transfer.

You can also combine both approaches: travel to your accommodation without a car, spend several days exploring a town or the islands, then rent a vehicle only for inland Algarve or the west of the region.

When you need a car throughout your stay, Faro Airport is generally the most convenient starting point. Before booking, check whether collection takes place inside the terminal, at the P4 car park or at an off-airport office reached by shuttle.

Use DiscoverCars to compare the available vehicles, but do not choose solely on the basis of the car shown. Identify the supplier that will actually provide it, read the company’s recent Google reviews and carefully check the accepted bank card, deposit, excess, insurance and any extra charges.

Best Deal and Luzcar are among the local car rental companies recommended by Amo-te Olhão. Whichever company you choose, always read the conditions applying to your travel dates before paying.

A final tip from Amo-te Olhão: first decide on the days when a car will genuinely be useful, then compare offers by looking at both the supplier and its conditions. A few minutes spent checking the details before booking can prevent most problems at collection.
