Your day-by-day Olhão itinerary

Day 1 - Explore Olhão

    Day 3: choose your experience

Discover a quieter side of the Ria Formosa with a nature walk and time to take in the landscape.

What to do in Olhão in 3 days: local tips

Olhão is ideal for a long weekend in the Algarve. Explore its historic centre on foot, take a boat to the Ria Formosa islands and discover the countryside beyond the coast. Here is how to enjoy your three days without spending your holiday rushing from one stop to the next.

Day 1: get lost in Olhão's historic streets

Start the morning at Olhão's red-brick municipal market halls to see the fresh produce and seafood stalls. Then wander through the narrow streets of Barreta and Levante, with their whitewashed façades, little squares and traditional rooftop terraces, known as açoteias. Part of the pleasure is simply getting lost without a strict route. After lunch at a local restaurant, follow the Caminho das Lendas (Legends Trail) and enjoy the waterfront.

Good to know: the municipal market halls are normally closed on Sundays. If Day 1 falls on a Sunday, simply swap your days so you can explore the markets on Monday morning.

Visiting with children? Make your walk through Olhão more fun with a family-friendly self-guided treasure hunt. It's an enjoyable way to explore the town's streets and stories, or an alternative to a free-form stroll.

Day 2: choose your Ria Formosa island destination

Rather than trying to fit in several ferry journeys, we recommend choosing just one destination. Armona is perfect for a relaxed beach day between the lagoon and the Atlantic. Culatra is where you can experience an authentic fishing village before walking to the beach. Farol, on the same barrier island as Culatra, is known for its lighthouse and beautiful stretches of sand.

Take the regular ferry (tickets are bought at the ticket office), use a water taxi for more flexibility, or book a guided boat trip if you'd like to see several places without planning the crossings yourself. Ferries run throughout the year, although services vary by season. Always check your return journey before leaving.

Boat crossings: services normally run as scheduled. Should exceptionally poor conditions affect departures, you can simply swap the island day with another part of your itinerary.

Day 3: nature, sightseeing or relaxation

Nature: discover the Ria Formosa from the mainland, perhaps following the trails around Quinta de Marim if access is available. For a longer walk, explore our guides to the walking routes around Olhão.

Sightseeing: take the train to Faro or Tavira and spend the day discovering just one town. Alternatively, join a guided 4x4 jeep safari departing from Olhão to see the Algarve countryside, panoramic views from Cerro de São Miguel and the Tavira area. These are alternatives, not activities to squeeze into the same day.

Relaxation: savour a coffee, enjoy a leisurely lunch and spend your afternoon however you please. For a proper wellness break, a spa circuit at the Real Marina Hotel & Spa is an option by reservation, including for non-hotel guests. Check the current conditions before booking.

If the weather changes: keep the final day flexible and browse our ideas for things to do in Olhão when it rains. You can also swap the order of your days if that suits you better.

Our tips for an unforgettable 3 days in Olhão

One island destination is enough for a wonderful day without racing to catch ferries. In Olhão itself, allow time to wander the backstreets. For markets, ferry crossings and booked activities, check the details for your travel dates before setting out.

Sunday market tip: Olhão's municipal market halls are closed on Sundays. If your first day is a Sunday, swap your days to enjoy the market on Monday morning. No extra planner required.
