5 days in Olhão: explore at your own pace
Five days in Olhão gives you time to get to know the eastern Algarve without packing up and moving on every night. Think fish markets, a characterful old town, two very different island days and a few easy escapes, all with Olhão as your base.
Our five-day itinerary mixes the old town, a full day on Armona, a relaxed trip to Tavira, a second Ria Formosa island experience on Culatra or Farol, and a final day for nature or downtime. Swap the days around to suit the weather, ferry times and opening days. This is a holiday, not a race.

Read the local tips for Day 1What to do in Olhão over 5 days: our local tips
Stay in Olhão, enjoy two very different island experiences and leave time to slow down. You can move the days around to suit the weather, transport and opening times.
Day 1 — Olhão markets, old streets and local life
Start with a day that is entirely about Olhão. No need to rush off to an island yet: the red-brick markets, the Barreta and Levante neighbourhoods and the Ria Formosa waterfront will give you a real feel for the town.
Morning — see the markets come to life
Start at the municipal market halls beside the lagoon. Fish, fresh produce and everyday conversations set the scene, especially in the morning. Saturdays bring extra stalls and a lively atmosphere outside. The halls are usually closed on Sundays, so swap this day if needed.
Lunch — keep it local and take your time
Stay in the centre for grilled fish, seafood or a cataplana if it is on the menu. There is no need to race between restaurant recommendations; find somewhere you like and enjoy it.
Afternoon — Barreta, Levante and the Legends Trail
Explore the whitewashed lanes, flat rooftop terraces known as açoteias, and Praça da Restauração. Follow parts of the Caminho das Lendas (Legends Trail) to find stories woven into the town. If you fancy a museum or church visit, check opening times first.
Evening — back to the waterfront
Head towards the gardens and lagoon-side promenade as the light changes over the fishing boats. Finish with dinner in Olhão instead of squeezing in another trip.
Day 2 — Armona, from the lagoon to the Atlantic
Armona deserves more than a quick return crossing. Make it an unhurried island day: ferry from Olhão, a wander through the village, time by the lagoon and, if you feel like it, a walk to the ocean-facing beach.
Morning — plan the ferry back before you leave
Check the outbound and return services together before heading to the quay. Ferries run year-round but are less frequent outside summer. Buy your ticket at the office, and allow time to board.
During the day — two shores, two experiences
You can reach the lagoon side near the ferry landing and explore the village without crossing the island. For the Atlantic beach, allow another walk of roughly 1–1.5 km depending on your access point. Swimming and walking conditions change with the season, tide and weather.
Late afternoon — come back without a scramble
You do not have to take the very last ferry. Summer queues can take longer than expected; in winter, a missed departure can disrupt the whole evening. Return with a comfortable margin and enjoy Olhão at night.
Day 3 — Tavira, an easy cultural day trip from Olhão
After your island day, it is time for a different pace. Tavira makes a lovely day out, with historic buildings, streets around the River Gilão and plenty of places to stop for lunch. You are exploring the eastern Algarve, not trying to see all of it at once.
Morning — take the regional train to Tavira
Check CP train times and head from Olhão station towards Tavira. From there, walk into the historic centre at a pace that suits you. A car is an option, but not essential for this day.
Lunchtime — the Gilão and the old town
Spend time around Praça da República, the bridge across the Gilão and the streets near the castle. Only plan a church or museum visit once you know it is open. Build in a proper lunch break.
Afternoon — choose one more stop, not five
Enjoy the centre, a café or an indoor attraction that is open. We would not automatically add Tavira Island: it means another transport plan. Check the return train before wandering too far.
Alternative — Faro instead of Tavira
Prefer city walls, a cathedral and the historic old town? Faro is a good substitute, also reachable by regional train. Choose Faro or Tavira, not both in one day.
Day 4 — Culatra or Farol: a different side of the Ria Formosa
A second island day does not have to feel like a repeat of Armona. Culatra is a lived-in fishing village, while Farol has its own lighthouse-side atmosphere and beaches. Pick one main destination rather than collecting ferry stops.
Culatra — slow down in the fishing village
Choose Culatra if you enjoy local maritime life, inhabited lanes and a walk towards the beach. Pack water and perhaps a picnic if restaurants may be closed, especially out of season.
Farol — lighthouse, village and beach
Choose Farol for a gentle day around the lighthouse area and the shore. The plan stays simple: ferry from Olhão, time to explore, then a return at a confirmed departure time.
The ferry detail that really matters
The Olhão–Culatra–Farol service has seasonal timetables and stops, but that does not guarantee a convenient hop between Culatra and Farol whenever you want one. Check the exact boat you would use and the service back to Olhão.
Guided alternative — see the lagoon differently
If wildlife, landscapes and a guide’s explanations matter more to you than an independent beach day, consider a guided Ria Formosa boat tour instead. Confirm its departure point, duration, stops and return. It is a substitute for this day, not an extra ferry trip.
Day 5 — Ria Formosa nature, Fuseta or a proper day off
For your final day, we would skip another big crossing. Look at the Ria Formosa from the mainland, take a trip to a nearby village, or slow down in Olhão. Choose just one main option.
Our nature pick — Quinta de Marim
East of Olhão, Quinta de Marim offers a land-based look at the Ria Formosa Natural Park, with birdlife, lagoon habitats and walking routes when accessible. Check the latest access arrangements, the heat and the journey from the centre before leaving.
Village and waterfront — Fuseta
For a slower fishing-village day, head to Fuseta for a stroll, lunch and views over the Ria. A regional train can help you get there, but check the right station and service. Reaching Fuseta Island beach requires a separate crossing from Fuseta, not a direct ferry from Olhão.
Taking it easy — another day in Olhão
Revisit the markets if you missed them, have a long breakfast, book a wellness break if available, or return to your favourite corner of town. Choosing a slow day is not missing out — it is one of the perks of staying here for five days.
How to plan 5 days in Olhão
Without a car: yes, with a little planning
The old town and ferry quay are close enough to explore on foot. Boats take you to the islands; regional trains connect Olhão with Tavira and Faro. Check the actual CP services and think through the final leg to Marim — we do not promise any particular connection.
Rain, wind and the seasons: be ready to swap days
If rain is forecast for Armona, swap that day for Tavira or somewhere sheltered in Olhão. If the wind looks uncomfortable, ask the operator about sailing conditions: strong wind does not automatically cancel ferries. Winter is lovely for town visits and some nature walks, but not the same beach holiday as summer.
Markets, museums, restaurants and boats all have different hours
The market halls are normally shut on Sundays. Museums have their own opening days, island restaurants can be seasonal and ferry services change over the year. Use our practical guides instead of relying on a timetable copied into an itinerary.
If we had five days in Olhão…
We would leave at least a couple of mornings unscheduled and put the boat trips on the nicest weather days. An island is best enjoyed slowly — rather than collecting photos from the deck of a boat. And we would come back to Olhão each evening to see the town in a different light.
What we would skip: expecting the markets to open on Sunday; confusing Armona’s lagoon shore with its Atlantic beach; assuming you can get a water taxi without arranging it; planning an unconfirmed Culatra–Farol connection; squeezing Faro and Tavira into the same day; or forgetting the journey back.
